Title: Atmospheric River Tracking Method Intercomparison Project Description: Tier 1: ----- Atmospheric River Tracking Method Intercomparison Project (ARTMIP) Tier 1 developer catalogues and source data. Each ARTMIP method/algorithm (named by developer) submits a catalogue comprised of 0's (no AR exists) or 1's (yes AR exists) for each time slice, for each grid point, using MERRA-2 reanalysis data from January 1980 through June 2017. Derived quantities required for algorithms, such as IVT or IWV, were computed by the ARTMIP project so that all methods use the exact same data. Tier 2 CMIP5/6: -------------- Atmospheric River Tracking Method Intercomparison Project (ARTMIP) Tier 2 CMIP5/6 developer catalogues and source data. Each ARTMIP method/algorithm (named by developer) submits a catalogue comprised of 0's (no AR exists) or 1's (yes AR exists) for each time slice, for each grid point, using a curated set of output from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 and 6 multimodel ensembles (see Table 1). Catalogues are created for single ensemble members from historical simulations and for RCP8.5 (CMIP5) and SSP5-8.5 (CMIP6) future simulations, for the 1950-2099 time period. Ensemble member r1i1p1f1 or r1i1p1f1 is used for each input, with the exception of the CMIP5 CCSM4 run, which uses ensemble member r6i1p1. Derived CMIP5/6 quantities required for algorithms, such as IVT or IWV, were computed by the ARTMIP project so that all methods use the exact same data. There are some exceptions to the time period noted above: output from the CMIP6 IPSL-CM6A-LR SSP5-8.5 simulation are only available through 2049, there are data corruption issues for the year 2006 in the CMIP5 CSIRO-Mk3-6-0 simulation, and there are data corruption issues for the year 2095-2099 for the TECA_BARD_v1.0 output applied to the CMIP5 IPSL-CM5B-LR simulation. The Guan_Waliser_v2 algorithm did not supply ARDT catalogues for the NorESM1-M and BCC-CSM2-MR simulations. Tier 2 Reanalysis: ---------------- Atmospheric River Tracking Method Intercomparison Project (ARTMIP) Tier 2 Reanalysis developer catalogues and source data. Each ARTMIP method/algorithm (named by developer) submits a catalogue comprised of 0's (no AR exists) or 1's (yes AR exists) for each time slice, for each grid point, using reanalysis data from MERRA-2, ERA5, JRA-55 and JRA-55C. Quantities required for algorithms, such as IVT or IWV, were provided directly from the reanalysis output to avoid differences due to vertical resolution of the lowest model level in the reanalyses. Required catalogs for each ARTMIP method/algorithm included hourly binary AR tags in MERRA-2 for the period of January 1980 through December 2019 and hourly binary AR tags in ERA5 for the period of January 2000 through December 2019. Participants also had the option to submit hourly catalogs for January 1980 through December 1999 in ERA5 and six-hourly catalogs for January 1980 through December 2019 in JRA-55 and JRA-55C. Tier 2 Climate Change High Resolution: ----------------------------------- Atmospheric River Tracking Method Intercomparison Project (ARTMIP) Tier 2 Climate Change High Resolution developer catalogues. Each ARTMIP method/algorithm (named by the developer) submits a catalogue comprised of 0's (no AR exists) or 1's (yes AR exists) for each time slice, for each grid point, using a curated set of climate change AMIP-style output from the Community Atmosphere Model's finite-volume dynamical core version at 25 km horizontal resolution, which was run by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Catalogues were created for three historical (All-Hist) ensemble members (run002: 1979 - 2005, run006: 1995 - 2005, run008: 1995 - 2005) and two RCP 8.5 (PlusRCP85) ensemble members (run001: 2079 - 2099, run002: 2079 - 2084). Derived quantities required for algorithms, such as IVT or IWV, were computed by the ARTMIP project so that all methods use the same data. There are some exceptions to the continuity of the simulations mentioned above due to missing data. The impact this missing data has on each algorithm depends on their construction. Data issues include: (1) All-Hist run002 — for prw/u850/v850 missing the year 1981, the first timestep (01 Jan 00 UTC) for the years 1985 - 2005, the timesteps 10 Dec 2005 03 UTC to 31 Dec 2005 21 UTC; for vhusavi/uhusavi/windhusavi missing the first four timesteps of (01 Jan 00 UTC to 01 Jan 09 UTC) for the year 1981, the first timestep (01 Jan 00 UTC) for the year 1985, the timesteps 05 Mar 03 UTC to 06 Mar 00 UTC and 08 Mar 03 UTC to 09 Mar 00 UTC for the year 1992, the timesteps 02 Jan 03 UTC to 03 Jan 00 UTC for the year 1993, the timesteps 09 Dec 03 UTC to 10 Dec 00 UTC for the year 2005, (2) PlusRCP85 run001 — for vhusavi/uhusavi/windhusavi/prw/u850/v850 missing the timesteps 01 Jul 03 UTC to 04 Jul 21 UTC of the year 2080; for vhusavi/uhusavi/windhusavi missing the timesteps 03 Sep 00 UTC to 31 Dec 21 UTC of the year 2082, (3) PlusRCP85 run002 — for vhusavi/uhusavi/windhusavi missing the timesteps 23 Sep 00 UTC to 31 Dec 21 UTC for the year 2084; for prw/u850/v850 missing the timesteps 01 Sep 00 UTC to 31 Dec 21 UTC for the year 2084. The mundhenk_v3 algorithm did not supply ARDT catalogues for All-Hist.run006, All-Hist.run008, PlusRCP85.run002 ensemble members.
